Psychotherapy

What is psychotherapy?

There are many definitions of psychotherapy. Our group defines this as a collaborative space and time where the individual and therapist work together to tackle issues that prevent emotional, behavioral, and interpersonal functioning. Psychotherapy is the time when an individual decides to dedicate personal time to explore past and present experiences to improve their quality of life so they reach contentment or joy in life. Psychotherapy has been demonstrated to be an effective tool to increase life satisfaction and coping strategies for life circumstances.

Here are some reasons why individuals dedicate their time to psychotherapy:

Our Psychotherapeutic Approach

Our group prefers to use evidence-based approaches which include CBT, DBT, along with psychodynamic/relational therapy. We take a very tailored approach which means that we aim to focus on individual characteristics, sociocultural background, and contextual information in order to increase treatment effectiveness.

Why should I seek out a therapist to help instead of handling it on my own?

You certainly can handle it on your own! However, over time, when there is no accountability to ourselves, our quality of life declines. Psychotherapy is a dedicated time when there is a mental health professional who holds you accountable to process experiences and focus on improving your life circumstances and interpersonal relationships. Everyone goes through challenging situations in life and you may have successfully navigated through other difficulties you've faced but there's nothing wrong with seeking out extra support when you need it.

Psychotherapy is for people who have the awareness to realize they may need a helping hand, and that is something to be admired. You start taking responsibility by accepting where you're at in life and making a commitment to change the situation at the moment and in the future. Psychotherapy provides long-lasting benefits and support, giving you the tools to avoid triggers, re-direct damaging patterns, and overcome whatever challenges you face.
